CVE-2026-82416 Vulnerability Summary

CVE-2026-82416: FrankenPHP is a modern application server for PHP. Prior to 1.12.5, FrankenPHP worker mode can retain PHP session state between requests when the session extension is loaded as a shared module and is unavailable through HAVE_PHP_SESSION at compile time. In this build configuration, frankenphp_reset_session_state() is compiled out, PS(id) can survive a request boundary, and a subsequent session_start() can ignore the new request's cookie because an identifier is already present. Under concurrent requests, session_id() can therefore return another client's identifier or a stale identifier from a previous request on the same worker thread, causing cross-user session exposure, possible session hijacking, and intermittent logout behavior. Builds with the session extension statically linked, including the official static binaries and Docker images, are not affected. This issue is fixed in version 1.12.5.

Assessing the Risk of CVE-2026-82416

Access Complexity Graph

The exploitability of CVE-2026-82416 depends on two key factors: attack complexity (the level of effort required to execute an exploit) and privileges required (the access level an attacker needs).

Exploitability Analysis for CVE-2026-82416

CVE-2026-82416 presents a challenge to exploit due to its high attack complexity, but the absence of privilege requirements still makes it a viable target for skilled attackers. A thorough security review is advised.

Understanding AC and PR

A lower complexity and fewer privilege requirements make exploitation easier. Security teams should evaluate these aspects to determine the urgency of mitigation strategies, such as patch management and access control policies.

Attack Complexity (AC) measures the difficulty in executing an exploit. A high AC means that specific conditions must be met, making an attack more challenging, while a low AC means the vulnerability can be exploited with minimal effort.

Privileges Required (PR) determine the level of system access necessary for an attack. Vulnerabilities requiring no privileges are more accessible to attackers, whereas high privilege requirements limit exploitation to authorized users with elevated access.

CVSS Score Breakdown Chart

Above is the CVSS Sub-score Breakdown for CVE-2026-82416, illustrating how Base, Impact, and Exploitability factors combine to form the overall severity rating. A higher sub-score typically indicates a more severe or easier-to-exploit vulnerability.

CIA Impact Analysis

Below is the Impact Analysis for CVE-2026-82416, showing how Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability might be affected if the vulnerability is exploited. Higher values usually signal greater potential damage.

  • Confidentiality: High
Exploiting CVE-2026-82416 can result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, severely compromising data privacy.
  • Integrity: High
CVE-2026-82416 could allow unauthorized modifications to data, potentially affecting system reliability and trust.
  • Availability: Low
CVE-2026-82416 may slightly degrade system performance without fully affecting service availability.

CAPEC Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification

  • Session Credential Falsification through Prediction CAPEC-59 This attack targets predictable session ID in order to gain privileges. The attacker can predict the session ID used during a transaction to perform spoofing and session hijacking.
  • Reusing Session IDs (aka Session Replay) CAPEC-60 This attack targets the reuse of valid session ID to spoof the target system in order to gain privileges. The attacker tries to reuse a stolen session ID used previously during a transaction to perform spoofing and session hijacking. Another name for this type of attack is Session Replay.
