CVSS Release:
CVE-2026-77912: A stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an authenticated attacker to inject arbitrary HTML attributes into rendered Markdown because the Markdown rendering pipeline rewrote quote characters in already-sanitized HTML without re-sanitizing the result. Crafted Markdown could abuse same-origin JavaScript gadgets to bypass Content Security Policy and gain control of the page DOM when viewed by another user. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to read content visible to the victim, extract embedded CSRF tokens, perform state-changing actions as the victim, and exfiltrate data through same-origin writes. The payload could also propagate to repositories and organizations where the victim had write access. This vulnerability affected supported GitHub Enterprise Server releases in the 3.17, 3.18, 3.19, 3.20, 3.21, and 3.22 series and was fixed in versions 3.22.1, 3.21.6, 3.20.8, 3.19.12, 3.18.15, and 3.17.21. This vulnerability was reported via the GitHub Bug Bounty program.
The exploitability of CVE-2026-77912 depends on two key factors: attack complexity (the level of effort required to execute an exploit) and privileges required (the access level an attacker needs).
No exploitability data is available for CVE-2026-77912.
A lower complexity and fewer privilege requirements make exploitation easier. Security teams should evaluate these aspects to determine the urgency of mitigation strategies, such as patch management and access control policies.
Attack Complexity (AC) measures the difficulty in executing an exploit. A high AC means that specific conditions must be met, making an attack more challenging, while a low AC means the vulnerability can be exploited with minimal effort.
Privileges Required (PR) determine the level of system access necessary for an attack. Vulnerabilities requiring no privileges are more accessible to attackers, whereas high privilege requirements limit exploitation to authorized users with elevated access.
Above is the CVSS Sub-score Breakdown for CVE-2026-77912, illustrating how Base, Impact, and Exploitability factors combine to form the overall severity rating. A higher sub-score typically indicates a more severe or easier-to-exploit vulnerability.
Below is the Impact Analysis for CVE-2026-77912, showing how Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability might be affected if the vulnerability is exploited. Higher values usually signal greater potential damage.
