CVE-2023-53613 Vulnerability Summary

CVE-2023-53613: In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dax: Fix dax_mapping_release() use after free A CONFIG_DEBUG_KOBJECT_RELEASE test of removing a device-dax region provider (like modprobe -r dax_hmem) yields: kobject: 'mapping0' (ffff93eb460e8800): kobject_release, parent 0000000000000000 (delayed 2000) [..] DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON(1) WARNING: CPU: 23 PID: 282 at kernel/locking/lockdep.c:232 __lock_acquire+0x9fc/0x2260 [..] RIP: 0010:__lock_acquire+0x9fc/0x2260 [..] Call Trace: <TASK> [..] lock_acquire+0xd4/0x2c0 ? ida_free+0x62/0x130 _raw_spin_lock_irqsave+0x47/0x70 ? ida_free+0x62/0x130 ida_free+0x62/0x130 dax_mapping_release+0x1f/0x30 device_release+0x36/0x90 kobject_delayed_cleanup+0x46/0x150 Due to attempting ida_free() on an ida object that has already been freed. Devices typically only hold a reference on their parent while registered. If a child needs a parent object to complete its release it needs to hold a reference that it drops from its release callback. Arrange for a dax_mapping to pin its parent dev_dax instance until dax_mapping_release().

Assessing the Risk of CVE-2023-53613

Access Complexity Graph

The exploitability of CVE-2023-53613 depends on two key factors: attack complexity (the level of effort required to execute an exploit) and privileges required (the access level an attacker needs).

Exploitability Analysis for CVE-2023-53613

No exploitability data is available for CVE-2023-53613.

Understanding AC and PR

A lower complexity and fewer privilege requirements make exploitation easier. Security teams should evaluate these aspects to determine the urgency of mitigation strategies, such as patch management and access control policies.

Attack Complexity (AC) measures the difficulty in executing an exploit. A high AC means that specific conditions must be met, making an attack more challenging, while a low AC means the vulnerability can be exploited with minimal effort.

Privileges Required (PR) determine the level of system access necessary for an attack. Vulnerabilities requiring no privileges are more accessible to attackers, whereas high privilege requirements limit exploitation to authorized users with elevated access.

CVSS Score Breakdown Chart

Above is the CVSS Sub-score Breakdown for CVE-2023-53613, illustrating how Base, Impact, and Exploitability factors combine to form the overall severity rating. A higher sub-score typically indicates a more severe or easier-to-exploit vulnerability.

CIA Impact Analysis

Below is the Impact Analysis for CVE-2023-53613, showing how Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability might be affected if the vulnerability is exploited. Higher values usually signal greater potential damage.

  • Confidentiality: None
    CVE-2023-53613 does not compromise confidentiality.
  • Integrity: None
CVE-2023-53613 does not impact data integrity.
  • Availability: None
CVE-2023-53613 does not affect system availability.
