CVE-2023-40179 Vulnerability Summary

CVE-2023-40179: Silverware Games is a premium social network where people can play games online. Prior to version 1.3.6, the Password Recovery form would throw an error if the specified email was not found in our database. It would only display the "Enter the code" form if the email is associated with a member of the site. Since version 1.3.6, the "Enter the code" form is always returned, showing the message "If the entered email is associated with an account, a code will be sent now". This change prevents potential violators from determining if our site has a user with the specified email.

Assessing the Risk of CVE-2023-40179

Access Complexity Graph

The exploitability of CVE-2023-40179 depends on two key factors: attack complexity (the level of effort required to execute an exploit) and privileges required (the access level an attacker needs).

Exploitability Analysis for CVE-2023-40179

With low attack complexity and no required privileges, CVE-2023-40179 is an easy target for cybercriminals. Organizations should prioritize immediate mitigation measures to prevent unauthorized access and data breaches.

Understanding AC and PR

A lower complexity and fewer privilege requirements make exploitation easier. Security teams should evaluate these aspects to determine the urgency of mitigation strategies, such as patch management and access control policies.

Attack Complexity (AC) measures the difficulty in executing an exploit. A high AC means that specific conditions must be met, making an attack more challenging, while a low AC means the vulnerability can be exploited with minimal effort.

Privileges Required (PR) determine the level of system access necessary for an attack. Vulnerabilities requiring no privileges are more accessible to attackers, whereas high privilege requirements limit exploitation to authorized users with elevated access.

CVSS Score Breakdown Chart

Above is the CVSS Sub-score Breakdown for CVE-2023-40179, illustrating how Base, Impact, and Exploitability factors combine to form the overall severity rating. A higher sub-score typically indicates a more severe or easier-to-exploit vulnerability.

CIA Impact Analysis

Below is the Impact Analysis for CVE-2023-40179, showing how Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability might be affected if the vulnerability is exploited. Higher values usually signal greater potential damage.

  • Confidentiality: Low
CVE-2023-40179 could lead to minor leaks of non-critical information without major privacy breaches.
  • Integrity: None
CVE-2023-40179 poses no threat to data integrity.
  • Availability: None
CVE-2023-40179 does not impact system availability.

Exploit Prediction Scoring System (EPSS)

The EPSS score estimates the probability that this vulnerability will be exploited in the near future.

EPSS Score: 0.057% (probability of exploit)

EPSS Percentile: 27.1% (lower percentile = lower relative risk)
This vulnerability is less risky than approximately 72.9% of others.

CAPEC Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification

  • ICMP IP Total Length Field Probe CAPEC-331 An adversary sends a UDP packet to a closed port on the target machine to solicit an IP Header's total length field value within the echoed 'Port Unreachable" error message. This type of behavior is useful for building a signature-base of operating system responses, particularly when error messages contain other types of information that is useful identifying specific operating system responses.
  • ICMP IP 'ID' Field Error Message Probe CAPEC-332 An adversary sends a UDP datagram having an assigned value to its internet identification field (ID) to a closed port on a target to observe the manner in which this bit is echoed back in the ICMP error message. This allows the attacker to construct a fingerprint of specific OS behaviors.
  • Application Fingerprinting CAPEC-541 An adversary engages in fingerprinting activities to determine the type or version of an application installed on a remote target.
  • System Footprinting CAPEC-580 An adversary engages in active probing and exploration activities to determine security information about a remote target system. Often times adversaries will rely on remote applications that can be probed for system configurations.
