CVE-2023-27895 Vulnerability Summary

CVE-2023-27895: SAP Authenticator for Android - version 1.3.0, allows the screen to be captured, if an authorized attacker installs a malicious app on the mobile device. The attacker could extract the currently views of the OTP and the secret OTP alphanumeric token during the token setup. On successful exploitation, an attacker can read some sensitive information but cannot modify and delete the data.

Assessing the Risk of CVE-2023-27895

Access Complexity Graph

The exploitability of CVE-2023-27895 depends on two key factors: attack complexity (the level of effort required to execute an exploit) and privileges required (the access level an attacker needs).

Exploitability Analysis for CVE-2023-27895

CVE-2023-27895 presents a challenge to exploit due to its high attack complexity, but the absence of privilege requirements still makes it a viable target for skilled attackers. A thorough security review is advised.

Understanding AC and PR

A lower complexity and fewer privilege requirements make exploitation easier. Security teams should evaluate these aspects to determine the urgency of mitigation strategies, such as patch management and access control policies.

Attack Complexity (AC) measures the difficulty in executing an exploit. A high AC means that specific conditions must be met, making an attack more challenging, while a low AC means the vulnerability can be exploited with minimal effort.

Privileges Required (PR) determine the level of system access necessary for an attack. Vulnerabilities requiring no privileges are more accessible to attackers, whereas high privilege requirements limit exploitation to authorized users with elevated access.

CVSS Score Breakdown Chart

Above is the CVSS Sub-score Breakdown for CVE-2023-27895, illustrating how Base, Impact, and Exploitability factors combine to form the overall severity rating. A higher sub-score typically indicates a more severe or easier-to-exploit vulnerability.

CIA Impact Analysis

Below is the Impact Analysis for CVE-2023-27895, showing how Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability might be affected if the vulnerability is exploited. Higher values usually signal greater potential damage.

  • Confidentiality: High
Exploiting CVE-2023-27895 can result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, severely compromising data privacy.
  • Integrity: None
CVE-2023-27895 poses no threat to data integrity.
  • Availability: None
CVE-2023-27895 does not impact system availability.

Exploit Prediction Scoring System (EPSS)

The EPSS score estimates the probability that this vulnerability will be exploited in the near future.

EPSS Score: 0.065% (probability of exploit)

EPSS Percentile: 31.45% (lower percentile = lower relative risk)
This vulnerability is less risky than approximately 68.55% of others.

CWE Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-267

CAPEC Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification

  • Restful Privilege Elevation CAPEC-58 An adversary identifies a Rest HTTP (Get, Put, Delete) style permission method allowing them to perform various malicious actions upon server data due to lack of access control mechanisms implemented within the application service accepting HTTP messages.
  • Probe Audio and Video Peripherals CAPEC-634 The adversary exploits the target system's audio and video functionalities through malware or scheduled tasks. The goal is to capture sensitive information about the target for financial, personal, political, or other gains which is accomplished by collecting communication data between two parties via the use of peripheral devices (e.g. microphones and webcams) or applications with audio and video capabilities (e.g. Skype) on a system.
  • Collect Data from Clipboard CAPEC-637 The adversary exploits an application that allows for the copying of sensitive data or information by collecting information copied to the clipboard. Data copied to the clipboard can be accessed by other applications, such as malware built to exfiltrate or log clipboard contents on a periodic basis. In this way, the adversary aims to garner information to which they are unauthorized.
  • Identify Shared Files/Directories on System CAPEC-643 An adversary discovers connections between systems by exploiting the target system's standard practice of revealing them in searchable, common areas. Through the identification of shared folders/drives between systems, the adversary may further their goals of locating and collecting sensitive information/files, or map potential routes for lateral movement within the network.
  • Collect Data from Screen Capture CAPEC-648 An adversary gathers sensitive information by exploiting the system's screen capture functionality. Through screenshots, the adversary aims to see what happens on the screen over the course of an operation. The adversary can leverage information gathered in order to carry out further attacks.
